Today was a very special day for our family, it was Scott's blessing day. Just to give a bit of background on the subject, for those that would like to know, the purpose of an infant's blessing is to give the infant a name and a blessing by someone that has the priesthood. The significance of giving the infant a name goes back to the days of the John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. Both of these men's births were prophesied by the mouths of angels, including the pronouncing of their names to Zacharias and Mary respectively. It is such a beautiful reminder of the fact that our Heavenly Father knows us, and there is a plan for each one of us. Then, as Jesus Christ ministered to those around him he often stopped to bless the sick, the needy, the penitant, and the children. So, as Scott received his name for life and for the records of church, he also received a blessing.
Traditionally the father is the one to perform this ordinance. It was so special to see my loving husband hold his son and give him a name and a blessing. The blessing was beautiful. He blessed Scott in many aspects of his life, but what I found to be the most beautiful of all was that Scott will find knowledge and spirituality in his life. I know that my son is a special boy, and he does have a lot of learning to do!
Because this is such a special day, and we have the opportunity to focus our love and attention on such a perfect and pure little child, we of course dressed Scott in white. We managed to keep Scott clean all the way through his blessing, then afterward he spit up all over his outfit. Too bad I didn't put the bib back on him!
Today was certainly a family affair, we had so many friends and family come from near and far for Scott's special day. And afterward we had a lovely reception at our home to have time together. It was a very busy and slightly chaotic afternoon, but it meant so much to me to feel the love and support from everyone.
